Markha valley trek is one of the best treks in Ladakh region of India. The trek trail will be mainly along River Markha where one will come across the vintage village of Markha village which consists of ruined fort, monastery and some 20 odd houses. You will be accompanied with beautiful meadows and the towering peaks of Himalayas.

Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Leh to Chilling by car (2 hours)

On the way we will see Magnetic Hill, after magnetic hill you will come across the confluence of River Indus & Zanskar. Actually Chilling village is situated on the bank of River Zanskar. The village is famous for its metal works. See if you can get any tribal jewelery, We will start our trek from Chilling to Skyu via trolley (to cross the river). Hiking time is 4 hrs. approx. Camping will be at an altitude of 4100 meters approx.

Day 2: Skyu to Markha (7-8 hours)

Following River Markha, we will hike through the beautiful valley on a fairly level ground. The trail intercepts the river at numerous points and passes thorough winter settlements that contain Lhatous (religious shrines for local deities) and Mani walls (stones inscribed with Buddhist prayers). Tourist season brings livelihood to these villages and one will see large number of tented teahouses open up serving refreshments. The largest village of this valley is Markha, deriving its name from River Markha. Markha village consists of not more than 20 houses, an old monastery and an ancient ruined fort to its name.

Day 3: Markha to Thachungtse (5-6 hours)

Trail of this trek passes through Markha village and opens up at Teach monastery, which proudly stands on a cliff and overlooks the Markha valley. The trail then transects the river often before cutting through the last villages in the valley.

After passing through the village of Umlung, we will get our first glimpse of mighty Mt. Kang Yatse (6496mt) which will stay in sight until we cross Kongmaru La. After our lunch in the village of Hangkar (the last one in the valley), we will continue to move towards the beautiful green landscape of Thachungtse (4222mt), where we will camp for the night.

Day 4: Thachungtse- Nimaling (4 hours)

Continuing our journey from the lush green fields, today the trail will take us to the beautiful plateau of Nimaling, where the people of the Markha valley bring their cattle to graze during the summers. At 4700mt, Nimaling is the highest camp (4600mt) of the trek. This point will give us spectacular views of the huge peak of Kang Yatse.

Day 5: Nimaling- Shang Sumdo via Kongmaru LA (7 hours)

Today we will cross the highest pass of the trek i.e Kongmaru La (5200mt). This pass will give us the opportunity to have a complete view of the Indus valley and Ladakh Range. This pass will also mark the decent of our trek. The descent is steep, but will slowly level out as we enter Shang Gorge. Shan Gorge will fascinate you with its amazing rock formation, more river crossing will block our way before we arrive at the sour- spring of Chuskurmo. The water from the spring is used in traditional medicine by the Amchi doctors. Today will be camping in Shang Sumdo for the night.

Day 6: Shang Sumdo – Leh Via Martselang

Today is the last day of the trek. Post breakfast we will trek for 2 hours to our pick up point to Martselang.  The jeep will pick us up from Martselang and drop at Leh. It will be possible to visit some of the great monasteries of Ladakh such as Thiksey, Hemis and Shey on the way to Leh.
