Gujarat has a rich history and it is the cradle of civilization and boasts of many historic locations related to Indus Valley Civilization. These are Lothal and Dholavira and they were renowned for advanced town planning and architecture. It was also a famous centre where Buddhism spread between 3rd century BC to 7th century BC and it emerged as an important place. Then during the reign of Rajputs between 11th and 12th centuries magnificent Hindu and Jain temples were built in Gujarat. The Jain temple complex based at Shatrunjaya Hill near Palitana and Mt Girnar near Junagadh are renowned for their beauty and elegance.

Then during the reign of Sultan Ahmed Shah, the city of Ahmedabad was founded and many mosques and mausoleum complexes were built that combined the best of Hindu and Islamic architectural styles. The state also witnessed development of ports and some exquisite havelis were built during those times. In your journey to Gujarat, you will get a chance to see major places of historical interest that are spread across this beautiful state.

Sarkhej mausoleum complex

Day 1: Arrive at Ahmedabad

You will arrive in Ahmedabad in the morning and start your journey. In the afternoon you will go on a visit to the famous Sarkhej mausoleum complex and go to the Vishala Village complex that boasts of a famous museum of utensils. You will be staying at the famous Mangaldas Girdhardas, a renowned heritage hotel that is owned by an industrialist family. You can also go and visit the local mosques.

Day 2: Explore Ahmedabad

The first place will be the Calico Museum of Textiles, a museum devoted exclusively to clothes. It includes a vast collection of textiles like Indian silk that has been discovered at famous archaeological sites in Egypt, silk sarees from all over India, floral embroidery from beautiful shawls from Kashmir Punjab, 18th century tie-and-dye, wardrobes of Rajasthan Kings, cloth paintings and manuscripts besides religious narrative cloth paintings like Pichwais and Kalamkaris. After that, you will head to the finely designed and renowned 15th century Adalaj stepwell.

Day 3: Ahmedabad – Palitana (240 km)

You will go for a heritage walk to various historical places in Ahmedabad and it will give you a chance to witness the old quarters of Ahmedabad that are lined with intricately carved wooden facades of havelis. Then you will be taken to Lothal to see the site museum and archaeological site that gives an insight into the town planning followed by the Indus Valley Civilization. Then you will go to Palitana/Bhavnagar. You have the option of staying at Vijay Vilas heritage hotel at Adpur village of Palitana or the Nilambag Palace Hotel in Bhavnagar.

Naulakha Palace

Day 4: Palitana – Gondal (170 km)

Then you will climb the famous Shatrunjaya Hill located near Palitana town and see the huge temple complex of nearly 863 temples that are spread across this hill. After that you proceed to Gondal to see the Naulakha Palace that is renowned for its rich and magnificent carvings and collections of the 1740s. You can spend a night at the Riverside Palace or Orchard Palace heritage hotel.

Day 5: Gondal – Junagadh – Gondal

First you will visit Junagadh and see the magnificent Uparkot Fort and the famous and splendid Gothic palaces of the Nawabs besides the imposing 19th century mausoleum complex. While coming back from there, you will go on a visit to the 4th century Buddhist caves in Khambhalida.

Day 6: Gondal – Dasada

You can enjoy a drive from Gondal to Dasada and visit the famous museum and feel enchanted with its beauty at Rajkot. The night stay will be arranged at the Rann Riders Resort in Dasada.

Sun Temple of Modhera

Day 7: Dasada – Modhera – Patan – Balaram (180 km)

The next day will start with a drive to the famous 11th century Sun Temple of Modhera which is widely believed to be one of the best examples of Hindu temple architecture in Western India. Then you will see the magnificently carved 11th century step well in Patan. On your way to Balaram you will go to Sidhapur that is renowned for its mansions and stately Palanpur. In the night, you will stay at Balaram Palace Resort.

Day 8: Balaram – Taranga – Vadnagar – Ahmedabad (250 km)

A short drive will take you to the famous 12th century Taranga Jain Temples and the famous and historic Vadnagar with its large number of historic and heritage buildings. After that you will come back to Ahmedabad.

Day 9: Ahmedabad – Champaner (60 km)

You will go to Champaner and see Pavagadh archaeological park that is quite famous for the beautiful works of Indo-Saracenic architecture. You also get a chance to witness the palaces of Vadodara and stay overnight at the heritage home in Jambughoda.

Day 10: Champaner/Jambughoda – Udaipur – Ahmedabad

Champaner/Jambughoda-Udaipur via Shamlaji or return and take a flight back home from either Ahmedabad or Vadodara.
