Whenever you will visit deeply this land, everyone can find many famous caves and temples who make an effect on the visitor, who is on the left with a direction of s’ to question on the creation of God, reinforced by l’ effort of l’ man.
Some examples of this phenomenon are Patal Bhuvaneshwar, Koteshwar Mahadev Cave Temple, Shikhar Bhanar Cave, Mata Bhadrakali Cave Temple, Maichula Mata Cave Temple.
The cave temple of Patal Bhuvaneshwar is located inside the village Patal in Pithoragarh district. This temple-like structure leads by a stony pathway outside of the cave. The entrance of the cave is a very narrow and slippery doorway, leading to inside the earth. The distance of the narrow passage stairs is hundred feet inside. Along the way, the claws and jaws of lord Narsimha. The amazing part of these structures in that they all have been formed out of natural rock. At the end of the narrow passage stairs there is a spacious hall where uncounted rocks are displayed to eye.
To understand the mythology embedded in every piece of rock one can require a guide. The awesome jaws of Shesnag point out the roof and, as one walks over a stair-like path is the back of this mighty snake. It is described in Purans, whether it is really supporting the earth over its head. At the other corner of Shesnag one more snake Thakshak. As Hindu mythology this snake bit the king Parikshit who was cursed to be killed from a snake bite.
In the middle of the pathway there represent the body of Lord Ganesha. Water drips down over the head of this idol from the rock shaped lotus signifying the legend when this little god had got his head cut from Shiva and before it could be replaced with the head of elephant, the body was to be preserved by the holy water of Sahasradal Kamal.
Next to this there are original idols of the famous pilgrim centers of Kedarnath, Badrinath & Amarnath. Pilgrims believe one visit to this cave is equivalent to the famous Char Dham Yatra.
There you will found the open mouth of the dog of Lord Kalabhairava. It is said that if a person enters into the mouth and reaches to the tail, he would be liberated from the cycle of rebirth. The idol of Goddess Bhuvaneshwari is visible with her weaponry in natural rock.
After that one can find the four entrances of the grate Ages. These are named as ‘Randwar’ ‘Papdwar’ ‘Dharmdwar’, ‘Mokshadwar’. At present time the first two dwars are said to be closed. ‘Randwar’ was closed after the end of fight ‘Mahabharat’ and ‘Papdwar’ was closed after the death of ‘Rawan’.
There is a rock which is looking like as a swan (hans). The story goes that Lord Brahma appointed a swan to separate water but the swan got greedy and tried to drink it, it was cursed to turn into stone with head turned sideward. A perfect head turned side ways can be seen in the piece of the stone. A huge number of small stones projecting out of one of the cave walls represent the 33 crore deities of the Hindus.
Sice water keeps seeping through the jatas of lord Shiva, it is considered to be a representation of the river Ganga falling from the heavens. Returning back form the other side there are four projections made of stone, representing Satyuga, Tretayuga, Dwaparyuga and Kaliyuga. The first three projections have stopped their growth, indicating the end of those eras; however the stone representing Kaliyuga is said to be gradually growing in its height once it touches the roof of the cave, indicating the end of the world. On the returning way the rock referred to as the thousand feet of the mythical elephant of Indra.
There are many more caves inside it. However, the mystery continues, and there are unsolved questions left behind, Ved Vyas, while describing this cave had said, “Patal Bhuvneshwar is as old as the earth itself”.
This famous temple is nearby the Patal Bhuvneshwar Temple. It is basically situated at Raiagar in Pithoragarh district.
The entrance of this cave temple is through a very narrow hole. This temple is dedicated to lord Shiva. Many stories are about to this temple. One Moksha Dwar is also there the way of this Dwar is finish in Varanasi but it looks as a very small hole.
Shikhar Moonnarayan cave temple is dedicated to Moolnarayan Devta. It is situated on the top of the hill. A very entrancing seeing of the valley and the grate Himalayas from there. The cave of this temple is between the two rocks. The length of this cave is still undefined. Shikhar Bhanar is also very famous for its trek tour.
The famous temple of Goddess Bhadrakali is situated at Sani Udiyar village, Bageshwar District. This temple is situated in a very peaceful and pleasant place. Mainly there are two caves and small river passes between the both caves. Wonderful natural idols are there which are created by rocks. There is a rock through which the water is falling over the natural Shivling. The length of the cave is 100mt. The way to go inside this cave is not so easy because as you go away more inside to it the level of water increases. People have many stories about the Maa Bhadrakali Shakti and the cave. Many Rishi-Muni stay on that place to do yoga and mediation.
Maichula Mata Cave Temple is situated at the top of Paladi village, Bageshwar District. This temple is also known as ‘Mayeka’, behind the main temple there is a very huge cave. Inside the cave there are many natural symbols, statues of gods. From the Mayeka temple one can view the beautiful valley of Garud and Someshwar.
