The Portuguese named the island as Elephanta during the 17th century at the time when they explored the site. Out of all the collections of religious art, you can see a common Trimurti-Sadashiva, which is a surreal. It is actually the three-faced image of Lord Shiva who is considered as the Destroyer, Lord Brahma the creator, Lord Vishnu the Maintainer, and Lord Shiva himself.
